Dead Sea Scrolls go digital
2011-09-28
2,000 years after they were created and decades after they were spotted in desert caves, some of the internationally renowned Dead Sea Scrolls are available on the net. Israel's countrywide museum and the world web giant Google are behind the project, which put 5 scrolls online Monday. The scrolls include the biblical Book of Isaiah. Google's technology permits surfers to search the scrolls for precise passages and interpret them into English. The scrolls available on the web were acquired by Israeli analysts between 1947 and 1967. They were initially found by Bedouin shepherds in the Judean Desert. They're held at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Google is also working with Israel to make the 1st all-inclusive and searchable database of the wider collection of scrolls.
